The AVR-S980H features discrete high-performance power amplifiers on all seven channels, delivering 90 W per channel (8Ω, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08% T.H.D., 2 channels driven). With low impedance driver capability, the unit offers operational stability with a wide range of speakers. As a system expands and power is shared across channels, Denon's 70% Power Guarantee ensures the AVR delivers over 70% of rated output to up to five channels simultaneously, keeping dialogue clear, effects controlled, and dynamics consistent across multi-speaker setups. Auto Eco Mode adjusts power output to speakers based on volume level in real time, reducing power consumption.

Dolby Atmos & Speaker Virtualizer
The AVR-S980H is equipped with a Dolby Atmos decoder. The placement or movement of sound is accurately reproduced by the addition of overhead speakers, enabling a natural and realistic surround sound field. Speaker Virtualizer enables a more immersive experience from traditional channel-based speaker layouts through digital signal processing, including Dolby Atmos height virtualization and surround virtualization. Speaker Virtualizer is not for use when both height speakers and surround speakers are connected. Height Virtualization may be applied when surround speakers are connected.

DTS:X & DTS Virtual:X
The AVR-S980H is equipped with the DTS:X decoder. DTS:X is an immersive object-based audio technology that removes the bounds of channels, allowing sound to be scaled and moved around the room with greater accuracy for a richer immersive audio experience. DTS Neural:X upmixer offers heightened realism for legacy content. DTS Virtual:X features DTS's proprietary virtual height and virtual surround processing to deliver an immersive sound experience from any type of input source (stereo to 7.1.4 channel) and speaker configuration. DTS Virtual:X is not for use when height speakers are connected.

8K Video, HDCP 2.3 & HDR Support
The AVR-S980H supports 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz input and output. A built-in digital video processor upscales 1080p and 4K content to 8K (7680 × 4320 pixels) via HDMI. The unit is compatible with HDCP 2.3 copyright protection. HDR support includes HDR10, HDR10+, Dynamic HDR, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), and Dolby Vision pass-through. HLG provides HDR technology over broadcast content.

HDMI Connectivity & eARC
The AVR-S980H is equipped with 6 HDMI inputs and 2 HDMI outputs, enabling connection to Blu-ray Disc players, game consoles, HD video camcorders, and other HDMI-compatible devices, with the ability to project the same image simultaneously via both outputs. The eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) function supports multichannel linear PCM, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD, DTS:X, and other audio formats that conventional ARC cannot transmit, enabling higher-quality surround playback of audio content from an eARC-compatible television over a single HDMI cable. ARC and eARC allow TV audio to be processed by the AVR using the same HDMI cable that carries video to the TV.

Next-Generation Gaming
The AVR-S980H supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Quick Frame Transport (QFT), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for a smooth, lag-free gaming experience when connected with compatible gaming devices. AMD FreeSync is also supported.

Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction
Audyssey MultEQ calibrates speakers using the supplied sound calibration microphone, measuring the acoustic characteristics of the room and automatically optimizing speaker levels, distances, and frequency response for the listening position.

High-Resolution Audio
The AVR-S980H supports playback of high-resolution audio formats including DSD (5.6 MHz) and FLAC 192 kHz files via USB and network sources, preserving greater detail, dynamic range, and tonal nuance than standard digital audio.

Powered by HEOS
HEOS is an app-based multi-room audio system allowing music to be streamed from online services and local libraries throughout the home. Multiple HEOS-enabled products on the same network can be grouped to play the same music simultaneously or different music independently. The HEOS app is available for iOS, Android, and Amazon devices. Compatible streaming services include TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, and Roon Ready.

Apple AirPlay 2
The AVR-S980H supports Apple AirPlay 2, enabling audio streaming from iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and iTunes. AirPlay 2 supports multi-room audio with simultaneous playback across multiple compatible devices and speakers. iOS 11.4 or later is required.

Bluetooth
The AVR-S980H supports wireless audio playback from smartphones, tablets, PCs, and other Bluetooth-compatible devices. The unit can also transmit audio to Bluetooth headphones, with the option to play through connected speakers and Bluetooth headphones simultaneously or through Bluetooth headphones only.

Multi-Source / Multi-Zone
The AVR-S980H supports two-source, two-zone audio. Independent sources can be played in the main room and a second room simultaneously, or the main audio source can be distributed to all zones. When the All Zone Stereo function is used, music playing in the MAIN ZONE can be enjoyed in all zones at the same time. The ZONE2 speaker terminals are assignable.

Phono Input
A built-in MM phono equalizer stage is included, allowing direct connection of a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge. A dedicated SIGNAL GND terminal is provided on the rear panel for turntable ground wire connection.

Denon Setup Assistant & Control
The Denon Setup Assistant provides guided on-screen setup instructions for speakers, network, and components. A web-based interface allows setup and control via TV, smartphone, or laptop. The Denon AVR Remote app enables control of power, input selection, volume, and music browsing from iOS and Android devices, and provides access to the setup menu, status display, and option menus.
