REL Serie T/x: T/9x – 10" Powered Subwoofer

The T/9x sits at the top of REL's Serie T/x, just below the flagship T/9x SE variant, and is designed to deliver more output and greater dynamics in both music and theatre applications without sacrificing clarity, transparency, or speed. Its larger internal cabinet volume releases more energy for the same amplification, and a completely redesigned driver and passive-radiator suspension, together with revamped internal damping, produces a substantial increase in dynamics, speed, and openness. At the end of development a new transistor within the ultra-reliable Class A/B amplifier was specified, yielding further gains in transparency across the entire sonic spectrum. The result opens the pathway for owners of high-performance European floor-standing, stand-mounted, and smaller panel speakers to enjoy truly full-range sound.

Highlights & Key Technologies

Reimagined, Then Reengineered
There is an intense linkage between performance and design at REL, where performance drives physical design revisions. Recognizing the need for greater acoustic volume to achieve greater fluidity and power, REL's engineers worked with the designer to manipulate dimensions so the eye perceives a smaller, more compact footprint even as cabinet volume increases. Gently rounded corner radii allow the eye to flow over the cabinet and see less visual mass, for a result that is both modern and familiar with no unnecessary adornment.

Outsized Performance
Achieving higher output with better control required a complete overhaul of the suspension components, which, much like the suspension on a sports car, are responsible for the tuning and feel of the design. Increasing cabinet volume improves efficiency, yielding higher output for no more amplifier power, and the reduced back pressure inside the cabinet allows tuning for a stiffer, better-controlled driver suspension. REL retained the best aspects of the previous design, such as the aluminum centre cap responsible for stiffening the lightweight 10" (250mm) cone while adding almost no mass. The updated combination produces considerably better attack and dynamics with greater transparency.

Tried and True Amplifiers
REL has retained its signature Class A/B amplifiers used in every generation of Serie T since 2006, with some 200,000 and counting of this range leading long, reliable lives. The powerful 300 watt mosfet amplifier used in the T/9x remains an icon with huge reserves of current and massive power supplies, while small upgrades are found everywhere: new driver mosfets that open up performance and transparency, and new methods for securing the toroidal transformers that mean better performance and superior strength. REL's legendary High Level Input connection and fast filters are a significant part of the REL story, connecting via the speaker outputs of your amplifier without drawing any power from it so the sound takes on a natural character. Unique tuning and special limiters mean the T/x range sounds fresher, faster, and more dynamic than before. A Standby Mode switch is only included on 220V units.

Wireless That Doesn't Compress the Sound
REL has developed a reputation for building the finest-sounding, fastest wireless systems available, never relying upon digital compression as it results in dull, lifeless sound. Instead, REL has perfected an optional Arrow wireless system so fast and dynamic that REL is comfortable encouraging the use of wireless on one channel of a pair of RELs while the other channel is connected conventionally with cable.

True Sub-Bass System & Connectivity
REL products are not traditional subwoofers but true Sub-Bass Systems, designed to augment the performance of full-range speaker systems and, in certain cases, provide linear response below 15 Hz. To maximize versatility, the Serie T/x provides three separate inputs: a High Level input via Neutrik Speakon connector, a Low Level RCA input, and a dedicated .1/LFE RCA input, facilitating use with both two-channel stereo systems and AV surround-sound systems. The High Level, unbalanced, dual-channel input accepts the stereo signal from the speaker terminals of a receiver, integrated amplifier, or basic amplifier, ensuring the subwoofer receives exactly the same signal as the main speakers so the character of the bass from the main system is carried forward. The REL's amplifier input impedance of 150,000 ohms means high-level connection produces no additional load on the rest of the system. Internal circuitry allows connection to many Class D (digital) amplifiers, and the High Level and .1/LFE inputs can be used simultaneously. The Phase switch affects all inputs, while the Crossover, variable between 20–120 Hz, affects the High and Low Level inputs but not the .1/LFE signal, which passes through with only the required 120 Hz fourth-order filter.

Set-Safe Overload Protection
All REL Sub-Bass Systems are designed to reproduce exceptionally deep notes that are felt as well as heard, at whatever volume level is set. If set too high, no damage should result because the built-in Set-Safe electronics limit cone movement, constantly and instantaneously monitoring the output from the power amplifier while remaining totally transparent in operation until required. Ordinarily an overload would cause the power amplifier to clip with resultant loss of control over the drive unit; Set-Safe detects the point of incipient clipping and gently soft-clips the waveform to ensure actual clipping does not occur, minimizing the risk of amplifier and driver damage from over-driving. A thermal overload device is also fitted to all Serie T/x systems, sensing temperature rise and cutting the output if the unit is deliberately over-driven, with a recovery time of approximately five minutes.

Power Saving Efficiency
All REL Sub-Bass System designs utilize a true On-Off switch that allows the owner to turn the unit off completely without unplugging the AC mains cord; when switched off using the rear-panel On-Off switch, the unit draws zero power. Leaving a REL on produces the best sonic performance and the most reliable operation, ensuring the Serie T/x is ready to react instantaneously to bass transients in both music and films.
